Triangle Real Producers Mag Shaun Smith Broker of the Month Society Real Estate

(2) a voluntary association of individuals for common ends; especially: an organized group working together or periodically meeting because of common interests, beliefs, or profession.

Upon considering the definition of ‘Society,’ Shaun and Michelle Smith knew it would be the perfect name for their new brokerage. They had both been running their separate real estate businesses for several years, and finally decided to join forces and create something new together.

Shaun had transitioned out of real estate sales 6 years ago to do acquisitions and development. He spent several years learning that side of the real estate industry; working full-time with a home building company, running their Acquisition and Development, and then branching out on his own in 2017. As a licensed REALTOR®, Shaun needed somewhere to hang his license, and that’s when he and Michelle started thinking about working together.

However, they didn’t want to go for one of the traditional partnership options—joining another firm together, setting up a team under another firm, becoming a husband and wife team on their own, etc.—they wanted to create something that combined their strong passion for giving back to the community with their passion for real estate. The term ‘society’ kept popping into Michelle’s head.

Society Real Estate works as a uniform team to take care of each individual client. “We’re trying to change the way people view the home buying experience, by partnering throughout the entire process and creating a genuine team experience. When someone chooses to partner with Society Real Estate, they not only partner with the individual agent, they also partner with the entire team,” says Shaun.

“We want to provide the best possible experience for our clients,” says Michelle. “We do that by pulling together what we each have to offer, between the length of experience, time in the community, knowledge about the development process, land use, and the ultimate buying experience for buyers regardless of price point.”

In addition to this unique team approach, Society Real Estate created a charitable portion to the business with the sole aim to be part of the solution to combat homelessness in the Triangle. The team handpicked and partnered with four local charities: A Lotta Love, CASA, The Green Chair Project, and The Raleigh/Wake Partnership to End and Prevent Homelessness.

Society Real Estate’s charity strategy is a threefold approach. 1) A percentage of every commission goes into their charity fund, which is evenly distributed to each charity every quarter. 2) The team participates in volunteer days, assist with special events, fundraisers, and joint marketing through social media, printed advertising, etc. 3) Every quarter, they host an Awareness Social to draw attention to each organization.

In just a few short years, Society Real Estate has grown into a team of 13 fulltime agents. They have also recently branched into the competitive market of providing sales and marketing services to builders and other developers. Shaun currently focuses on mentoring the team and working to grow the sales and marketing side of the company.

“Seeing the growth of others has been the most rewarding thing I have done in my career,” says Shaun.

Shaun and Michelle have two boys—Kieran (11) and Lucian (12). Although much of their time outside of the business is spent participating in both social and service-oriented community events, they enjoy going to Jordan Lake as a family, boating, and wakeboarding.
